Spotlight on New Mexico Composers ~
Chatter’s 2nd Annual Spotlight on a New Mexico Composer features New Mexico composer and visionary new music leader of international stature, John Kennedy. His compositions have been performed worldwide and featured at major festivals including the Paris Festival d’Automne, San Francisco’s Other Minds Festival, Singapore Arts Festival, Colorado Music Festival, Melbourne Arts Festival, Grand Teton Music Festival, Kanagawa Arts Festival. He has been commissioned by the Santa Fe Opera, Sarasota Opera, Contemporary Youth Orchestra of Cleveland, pianist Sarah Cahill, and many others.
A leading advocate of new music, Mr. Kennedy is the founding Artistic Director of Santa Fe New Music. He is the Resident Conductor of Spoleto Festival USA where this year he will conduct the American Premiere of Philip Glass’ opera Kepler as well as American Premieres of orchestra works by John Cage, Jonny Greenwood, Toshio Hosokawa, Toshi Ichiyanagi, and Somei Satoh. In July, he will conduct Saariaho’s opera Emilie at the Lincoln Center Festival.

fp “For Piotr” Composed for violinist Piotr Szewczyk and premiered at the New World Symphony.
Garden Winds (2011) New Mexico Premiere. For flute, oboe, clarinet, string quartet, percussion. An ode for the passing of a friend.
Both A meditation on duality, the viola solo Both was composed as an interlude for the chamber cantata One Body, in which a singer uses both his baritone and countertenor ranges.
Island in Time (2012) New Mexico Premiere. An overlay of musical memory as well as “pockets” of silences and soundings – islands in time.
Insignia of Image (2012) Premiere. Shadowed melody turns to harmony in this “open form” composition for any two instruments with percussion obbligato.
To the Power and Beauty of Everybody
A little prayer for string quartet inspired by a poem by Kenneth Patchen.
